I think tracing the path would be useful - PR gladly accepted! And yes, same basis function for both. There's no extra trickery, it's just interpolating the masters it has been given.

Cheers would be good to see in detail how it works for those two use cases. Part of my designer instinct is saying that what works for one glyph might not work for another, am I correct in my understanding that you propose a single basis function for the font?
