Question for the @rustlang community: would Rust benefit from an alternative to http://crates.io on GitHub? https://github.com/features/package-registry …

Replying to @ryan_levick @rustlang
I voted no, but this depends on exactly what such a repository would bring. I think the community currently benefits greatly from the coherence of having one place to go, and there's a sense of needing to curate that well. I worry this could get diluted.

But if there's a clear value proposition, a commitment of resources, and a governance structure that clearly benefits the community (all tall orders!) then it could be an important new resource.

The potential coordination problems are immense. What happens when crates:serde diverges from ghrust:serde? This makes the current squabbles over squatting and namespacing look like small potatoes.
