I'm not ready to go that far, but some of the ideas are similar to the way sprites are implemented in hardware. It's all about reducing global memory traffic and doing the logic in registers!

I also want to race the beam, and am writing a blog post on why the compositor is evil. But you can also race the beam on a GPU :)
