CTFontCopyDefaultCascadeListForLanguages() is most likely not what you want, CTFontCreateForString() is.

I can see that a lot closer to the DirectWrite approach, but I think there are tradeoffs each way. Could you please file an issue and we can discuss it there?

No need to apologize, it's extremely useful feedback to know this a choice. I filed https://github.com/linebender/skribo/issues/14 … to capture the discussion on this side, and will give some more thought whether there's a better API we could use.
