Use a G2 continuous interpolating spline as an alternative to Béziers, native to the font format. Use a tiny neural net for kerning, rather than tables. Oh wait, you asked about 2.0, not 5.0, sorry.

Shaping is done with simple state machines that are defined by a small, principled spec.

AAT and Graphite do state machines, type designers are not thrilled about that.

Sure. What I'd like is a high level, declarative approach that compiles into state machines. A big problem with AAT and Graphite is tools. But this is not an easy problem.

Yes. The lack of AAT support from designers may be largely attributed to lack of decent tools. But also: perhaps the success of OTL among designers can be largely attributed to the fea language, which, despite all its flaws, is easy to get into, and is widely available.

Be careful about state machines. We need to maintain cluster map too.

Not only tools, but having to duplicate standard logic (e.g. Arabic shaping table) in each font is not a very thrilling prospective. The declarative nature of OpenType layout lends itself well to sharing the knowledge by having it in the engine itself.

But isn't that issue orthogonal to the fact that AAT internally uses state tables?
