I consider myself a scientific skeptic. Politically, I try very hard to be a pragmatist, though my basic leanings are left. No pronouns; use my screen name.

I recently discussed how naïve we provaxxers were pre-pandemic. We used to assume that vaccines were victims of their own success and if antivaxxers only saw the mass suffering and death a vaccine-preventable disease (which #COVID19 is now) can cause, they’d stop being antivax.https://twitter.com/JHowardBrainMD/status/1398648680396230661 …

My thinking- Pre-covid: people are antivaccine largely because they never saw what these diseases can do. Now: people’s identities are more important to them than their lives. https://twitter.com/karenpaulscbc/status/1398623202226491396 …

We were hugely and painfully mistaken. Mass suffering and death due to #COVID19 made antivaxxers even more antivaccine and opposed to any #CovidVaccine.🤷🏻‍♂️

I don’t have a survey to back me up, but I think most of the COVID-19 antivaxxers are also COVID-19 seriousness deniers. I believe that if COVID-19 had a fatality rate more like smallpox, there would almost certainly be many fewer antivaxxers.

Given my experience over the pandemic, I'd take that bet and be 95% certain that I'd win it, expecting to hear: "You have a 70% chance of surviving. It's nothing!"

There have been antivaxxers since the very first vaccine for smallpox was around, which wiped out more than a few civilizations

Many in the COVID-19 antivaxxer crowd also believe that the fatality rates are falsely reported (e.g. deaths from other causes are reported as Covid-19 etc.) which is odd because they also claim that COVID-19 was released as a bio weapon. Seems a bit inconsistent to me.

Yeah, there are some camps that just want it to be a lab leak to vindicate Trump and their group also. And also for more anti-China sentiment. But what's really more likely? A super secure lab, or a terribly regulated wet-market.

(anecdote not data) My brother died yesterday after 5 months in the hospital with Covid ravaged lungs. Family "probably" (not sure they admit it) had Covid, but wouldn't/won't get vaxed. Have a neighbor hospitalized and out, won't get vax.

When people try to tell me that it’s “not so bad” or “just like flu” I point out that I am 71 years old and have never personally known anyone who died of influenza. But in just a little more than a year, I’ve had a friend and an acquaintance die of COVID. They were 33 and 52 yo.
