No boundaries: Exfiltration of personal data by session-replay scripts https://freedom-to-tinker.com/2017/11/15/no-boundaries-exfiltration-of-personal-data-by-session-replay-scripts/ … Simultaneously excited to reveal this research and depressed about the state of the web.

        * 'Session replay' scripts record everything, like someone looking over your shoulder, and send it to a third party. * Includes passwords, medical info, other personal info. * Proper redaction is a near-impossible human & technical problem.pic.twitter.com/dIGwR7InPK

Your keystrokes are recorded by third parties as soon as you type them, even if you never submit the form. If you accidentally copy-paste something, that's recorded too.

Even if you're visiting an HTTPS site, your data might be sent over the network in the clear! Not a failure of HTTPS --- it's because the 3rd party doesn't enable HTTPS when the publisher logs in to replay your session.pic.twitter.com/ZlL1ireviO

This is our latest study using our open-source web privacy measurement tool OpenWPM. https://github.com/citp/OpenWPM  At least 20 other studies have used it, both by us and many others: https://webtransparency.cs.princeton.edu/webcensus/index.html#Users … Hope you find it useful!

Important to highlight this, nice work! But.. are you really surprised? This has been going on for a while. Also worth noting that good web teams are very careful with usage of these third parties for all the reasons you mention.

Always good to keep the rest of us posted, even if the researchers themselves are not surprised...

Nothing better than thoughtfully considered remedies to exploitable weaknesses. The alternative is much worse than web-depression; it's whatever follows SOMETHING MUST BE DONE.
