The piece makes a bit of a bizarre claim. There is, after all, an entire field that is devoted to studying this question, namely Science & Technology Studieshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science,_technology_and_society …

The timing is also weird, considering that in the last couple of years, Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency of Algorithms has exploded as a research area https://www.fatconference.org/2018/index.html

The problem isn’t that academics are asleep at the wheel -- we aren’t even behind the wheel. Our voices aren’t being heard by industry and government as much as they should be. So should we simply yell louder? We can try, but we’re limited when we do so individually.

There's a huge role for organizations that co-ordinate & amplify the voices of academics who study the impact of tech on society. Orgs like @datasociety have been effective and new ones like @AINowInstitute are being created. The problem is already being addressed.

But the author is keenly aware of all this, and is close to the aforementioned communities and organizations. So does she have a point? Should academics be doing things differently? Frankly I’m not sure.

The main actionable take-away I see is that we need more interdisciplinary institutes at universities, responsible for ethical training of data scientists, engaging with industry & policymakers, and updating ethics standards.

But such institutes are popping up every month. I must plug @PrincetonCITP which has been doing all the above activities for a decade!

Could there be more such efforts? Always. And funding agencies & tenure committees could look more favorably upon interdisciplinary work. But suggesting that there’s a crisis is disingenuous, and could do more harm than good.

The message of this piece could have been "let's listen to these smart folks in academia" or "let's fund more interdisciplinary research on algorithmic accountability". Here's hoping for a more constructive, less polarizing conversation :)
