People giving career advice should specify the sample that it's based on. Human nature is to overgeneralize from personal experience, so most advice should be considered suspect for being based on a sample size of 1. That's why there's so much conflicting advice on any topic.
Obviously I should follow my own advice 
My previous tweet is based on receiving dozens of well-meaning pieces of career advice over the years from knowledgeable senior people but then realizing that most of them were based on assumptions that didn't apply to my situation.
If you want to share your career experiences with your mentees, go ahead! They'll welcome it. Just don't call it advice unless you have a good reason to think it will work out for them as well as it did for you. And don't be offended if they treat it as one data point among many.
Absolutely! Advice is over-rated. Sharing N=1 personal stories, with context, is under-rated. When we share personal stories framed as advice, we can make things worse. Career, diet, and exercise are particularly high-context domains
Not only a sample of one, but a sample embodying survivor bias.
The key is to not share advice, but share thought processes! Easier for people to adapt to their own context. And, perhaps selfishly, this creates more of a dialogue between advisor/adviser where the advisor gets to learn just as much 
Moreover, IME some career advice is given with an unconscious aim of persuading the recipient to choose a path that post-validates choices made earlier by the advisor. In other words, if I advise you to choose X & you do, then my earlier choice of X must have been correct.
Well, [good] advising has almost nothing to do with sharing personal experience, in any case. It is more about asking the right questions to help someone clarify their own thought process. "The Coaching Habit" is an excellent book on the topic of advising conversations.
