Radicalization via YouTube, as widely understood, is when someone watches a few partisan videos and unwittingly starts a feedback loop in which the algorithm gradually recommends more and more extreme content and the viewer starts to believe more and more of it.

That’s the note on which I’d like to end: a plea to consider that the available quantitative methods can’t answer everything. And I want to thank the journalists who’ve been doing the next best thing — telling the stories of people led down a rabbit hole by YouTube’s algorithm.

Fascinating. Could you create an "otherwise" by quantifying how recommendations change when a user is or is not logged in and creating a history for the algorithm to use? (i.e. use a VPN and incognito mode as a control?)
-
The problem is that relies on Google allowing for a 'blind' mode, which we all know they don't. Don't respect privacy settings, incognito modes, VPN or anything.

I don't understand why the paper you're critiquing in this thread would not be considered the "otherwise." By not logging in it denies the algorithm a lot of inputs.

I would understand this as a general remark about TV, or media without an algorithm.

i think of "otherwise" meaning whatever the user would search and find using keywords that interest them or names they found watching videos that came up by keyword. There can be more and less capitalistic algorithms.

Could a neutral be created in a way similar to the baseline in an ERGM. Great videos like a network node and views like a edge. Then you can ask given the attributes of the video are they more likely to also to view a more extreme or less extreme video.

But we can ask if there's a counterfactual - an anti-algorithm that would do the opposite of what the current one is doing. But why must there be an algorithm? Can't we posit a youTube where recommendations aren't based on user history?

I think the "otherwise" is not watching YouTube contents at all. You don't watch extreme content neither some of the best available content in the internet, what in today's terms mean some of the best available videos in the world.

Is the "otherwise" not the first time tgey logon as a fresh, virgin user.
