But there are also plenty of interdisciplinary “technology for social good” communities that rely heavily on the input of social scientists and philosophers to grapple with these questions. Examples: ICTD, ACM COMPASS

https://acmcompass.org/ (With plenty of interdisciplinary representation and discussion.) The “data science” track is a new addition to the community, and indeed there were some heated discussions last year. Point being: possible strawman in that article..

I don't think this paper gives the many computer scientists who've resigned rather than work on projects they find unethical much credit. The problem is not a lack of moral reasoning; it's that we persist in building opaque products that prevent any inclusive, pluralistic debate.

More interaction between computer scientists and public choice economists may, I dare say, be one obvious way to make a start, especially in the context of technologies that are reshaping societies and economies. Collaboratively devise new “social planner’s problems”.

Computer geeks trying to 'do good' in society is about the most stupid idea ever. Computer scientists create tools. These tools can be used for good or bad, and will. It's impossible to predict the social impact of your tool. Best you can & should do is a solid risk assessment.

Hasn't stopped computer geeks from doing it, and also insisting they are the good people. Just look at Aadhaar.

My experience is that practitioners of computer science are some of the most arrogant and intense sufferers of all of the problems of the eurocentric sciences. Specifically, see pp 574 - 551 of https://education.usask.ca/documents/profiles/aikenhead/IKS_revisited.pdf …

Thank you for posting! I've just stumbled across your work and had come to many of the same conclusions, but from a different route. I'm off to get more of your papers now.

I didn't realize people expected technology to fix substantive inequality and oppression. Isn't that why we have economics and political philosophy? This article smells of straw.
-
It seems to me that people latch on to smaller senses of "social good" when they work on projects like this such as "better access to information" or it's just their way of saying "pro bono work" like setting up websites for dog shelters.
