In our research, we've found that designers of dark patterns have three main motives: making apps more addictive, nudging you to buy more, and getting around privacy protections. In other words, they want three things from you: your time, your money, and your data.

We're all used to fighting addictive apps — auto-playing videos, notification bombardment — but some apps are more devious. Uber tempts drivers with an arbitrary daily "goal" when they try to quit. How many tired drivers has Uber nudged into an accident? https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/04/02/technology/uber-drivers-psychological-tricks.html …pic.twitter.com/FpOfyskM5S

Here's a notorious anti-privacy dark pattern by (who else?) Facebook. You have to admire the deviousness.https://twitter.com/frabcus/status/1001029934670929920 …

Facebook actually put *fake red dots* to try and make you think you have messages even if you don't, so you agree to their tracking more hastily. And they should get what every other predatory business gets: strict regulation that protects the unwitting consumer from trickery and malice.
