Ok, this is a thing that really bothers me about Western movies/TVs/books this days, maybe someone has some insight. Every hero is the "chosen one", everyone has been foretold in a prophecy- they are just badass for no reason but birthright. They do absolutely nothing to earn it.

This has been going on for a long time in western media, mostly because it sells well. I suspect a part of that is down to the arthurian mythos, and more recently, star wars (and even more recently Harry Potter), which are most westerners first exposure to accessible epic fantasy

Since movies are made for accessibility and tend to not take too many risks, they repeat the tropes that sell. If you look at recent fantasy/sci fi (and even a few YA) books that are actually winning awards you’ll find many more nuanced stories. 2/

I don’t have enough experience with chinese literature to speak authoritatively on it, but it seems very similar to the Xianxia trope of “being the only one who remember his past life” and using that as an advantage

With that said, Xianxia seems to acknowledge that most success is very dependent on luck, hard work, and stacking every possible advantage rather than prophecy or birthright (which only helps in giving you a starting advantage -important, but often wasted by “young masters”)
