There's an old saw in fantasy writing that magic must have a price. I find a lot of folks interpret this literally: it makes your wizard tired, causes them pain, whatever. I find it far more interesting when the cost is that it becomes easier to be a worse version of yourself
The “magic as drugs” metaphor isn’t inherently bad, it’s just always too anvilicious to be genuinely disturbing, or done by people who don’t actually seem to understand addiction. Magic impacting executive function could be a super fun time.
