    Ok now for real. Does nobody read the cover letter? Sometimes that's the only thing that a candidate has control over. Publications have not much to do with your intelligence or hard work. It's 80% luck. If you are not in a nourishing environment you are essentially screwed.

    Dear job applicant, Please send us a cover letter that no one will read. Please also send a teaching philosophy that no one will read. These documents are required, although the final decision will be made on the basis of your publications.

    Academia is a space where the work is continuous, but milestones are few and far between. You have to celebrate progress that doesn’t come in the form of a milestone. Asking for help is progress, writing a paragraph is progress, finding inspiration to keep going is progress.

    Someone asked me why people bully each other in academia and the short, no bs answer is: because they CAN. They'll almost never fire the grant-winning, high impact journal publishing professor (even when they're also the abusive, harassing TORmentor).

    Our code and the weights of trained networks are publicly available for that reason. I hope that sharing the code will become a standard in the future. I believe that journals, especially the big ones, should require it. 7/N
