I think that we are much more similar to other animals than we like to admit. Probably the main thing differentiating us from animals would be our language ability, which is hard-wired into humans (and which other animals do not have).

Are you certain other animals do not have the ability to communicate?
Oh yes, they do have a way of communicating, but it's not through a formal language, where they make verbally articulated noises corresponding to specific things (which is essentially what language is essentially). Animals communicate telepathically, so do not need language.
