This is the story of Giorgio Paglia, born in Bologna in 1922. Gold medal for military valor. He was a 4th year student of Engineering at Politecnico when he was drafted. When Italy signed the armistice with the Allies, he fought the nazis bear Rome, where he was stationed.

In the spring of 1944 he was back in northern Italy and joined the Resistance (53rd brigade Garibaldi). On November 17th 1944 he was captured with 7 others, after a 2 hour skirmish against prevailing Fascist forces. Two of the 7 prisoners were killed cowardly after surrender.

The other 5 were summarily sentenced to death, but Giorgio was not, in honor to his father, a decorated war hero fallen in Ethiopia in 1936. He refused clemency and asked to share the fate of his comrades in arms.

In fact, he asked to be the first, so that his comrades would have no doubts on his resolve. He faced the firing squad on November 21st 1944. From the sacrifice of this
