Our fancy new kitchen faucet is only usable for the first 20% of its max power. Use more and it just makes a big mess of the place. It's the Boss Metal Zone of faucets.

if Gravity Sketch would allow me to work like the model maker actually works: hands supported against the table, it would be more useful, and therefore more fun to use. Being able to do something is the ultimate fun. Maximum effect for minimum effort.

The Law of Laziness eventually trumps over having fun through physical movement. It's like in the early days of Nintendo Wii Tennis. You started by really waving your hands like in real tennis. After two days you switched to playing with as minimal movements as possible.

It's slightly ironic also that many opinions go around where "good VR = really moving around and waving your hands as much as possible". There's truth to that in relation to having fun through physical exercise, but generally the argument breaks apart easily.

To really crack 6DOF VR input, one should look at how people that do precision work with their hands really operate nowadays and have a setup that is capable of replicating that level of precision. The scale of everything is now way off. Precision equals efficiency.

VR controllers still have a big mismatch against how humans usually work with their hands. People move their hands far less but have far higher precision in their movements than what most VR controllers provide you. This creates a cascade of effects.

Of course that problem by itself also carries potential - activities that require more physical effort can also be healthier for you, forcing you to move and be more active than when slouching over the keyboard and mouse.

It's an underestimated problem how physically straining it is to do something useful in VR (take Gravity Sketch once again) with 6dof controllers for a long period of time. Traditional computer use is optimized to so physically light limits that it's hard to reach the same state.

Sculpting a 3d model of ant in VR using Gravity Sketch and a subdivision based approach. GS is wonderful in taking full advantage of the added possibilities of 6DOF input - enabling workflows that a traditional mouse and keyboard simply do not allow.

Every year I do a big macro presentation. This year, ‘Standing on the shoulders of giants’; we connected everyone (!), and wonder what's next, but meanwhile, connecting everyone means we connected all the problems. Tech is becoming a regulated industry

A view from the Varjo offices today. Yes it's still just a device. But it's ok to put stuff on a pedestal sometimes! Life is too short not to celebrate what you're doing.

My daughter was rummaging through my drawers, found this and brought it curiously to me. "Daddy, what's this?" "This used to be from a future." I designed a bunch of stuff for this way back. I also had a Psion 5mx and used it for half a semester in school to take notes.

A trailer for 'A Hidden Life'. Just look at those stunning wide-angle shots. Absolutely mesmerizing framing and camera work. I love Malick's movies for - for what they are. His aesthetic sense and mood-setting is for me almost second to none.

Any best practice tips on how to do "gaussian blur" in VR in a way it would make sense and not look weird? Is there some high performance Depth Of Field effect that I'm not aware of?
