    In just 100 years, fossil fuel use has more than undone 5000 years of natural cooling. It's hotter now than any time in the history of human civilisation. We are catapulting ourselves out of the Holocene into uncharted territory. Current life on Earth is not adapted to this.

    What’s going on in California is astonishing and only in any other normal time would be 24-7 news coverage. We are fast approaching a million acres burned in a week... far more than the average for an entire year and the season has just begun. It’s gonna be a long season :(

    When I published this account of California’s horrifying ongoing fires yesterday afternoon, 600,000 acres has burned. Now it is over 900,000. Two ongoing fires ranked seventh and tenth in state history. Now they are two and four. Since yesterday afternoon.

    I can't recall ever having noticed have wind speed probabilities from multiple storms overlap like this. Tropical depressions 13 & 14 are both forecast to become hurricanes (presumably "Laura" and "Marco") and impact the Gulf of Mexico next week.

    Kenntnisstand 1927 war, dass eine CO2-Verdoppelung zu einer globalen Erwärmung um 4,9 - 6° führen würde. Einige der aktuellen Klimamodelle liegen auch in diesem Bereich; wahrscheinlich ist dieser Wert der Klimasensitivität aber etwas zu hoch. Mehr dazu:

    The sea north of Greenland is where we usually find the thickest, multiyear sea ice. This year...was different. Polarstern could steam with 5-7kn even above 88°N! Reaching the North Pole yesterday surrounded by thin ice, littered with melt ponds. 📸 Steffen Graupner/AWI 1/4
