hello people can you PLEASE fucking stop doing endless variations on "this should have been a post instead of a Twitter thread" when someone chooses Twitter as a platform for a longer thread it is annoying AND ableist AND it's not news to anyone that blog posts exist

  5. I’m not sure why this is still a controversial statement but nondisabled parents and siblings of disabled kids and nondisabled partners of disabled adults do not actually experience more discrimination or hardship than disabled people themselves.

  12. I'll end with: if you're interested in the process of forensic DNA analysis, call your local police community liaison and ask if their lab does tours or lectures! Some do. Also, CSI is complete rank bullshit and gets absolutely nothing correct, do not listen to it, the end.

  13. (I personally am WAY more concerned about the issue I referenced all the way back at the top of the thread: the use of unreproducible, subjective bullshit forensic "science" like bite mark analysis. But, again, different thread.)

  14. If you have a different opinion, I'm not trying to tell you that you're wrong! But the discussion I've seen about the issue is mostly grounded in not understanding the science or the process, so I wanted to provide (way too much) info on what is actually happening!

  15. As someone who is sharply critical of the institution of policing as practiced in this country, and who recognizes the bias involved in the process, I personally do not think everything I just explained is any more of a privacy or liberty risk than the risk that already existed.

  16. The DoJ has issued nationwide guidance sharply limiting the cases where DTC genetic testing services can be used like this, and although we can never count on DoJ guidance to be unchanging, it shows they're already thinking about the problem.

  17. The process has also not yet been well challenged in court -- courts may very well find this a 4th amendment violation! -- and many states are passing laws to prevent using DTC genetic testing services as a source of investigatory leads.

  18. The process is prohibitively expensive for most jurisdictions. DTC subscription, the time for family tree research (or the cost of outsourcing it), the investigative time to screen all the names that result, the travel time for the trash pulls, and then the confirmation testing.

  19. But companies like Ancestry and 23andMe, and the third party genealogy sites toy can upload their data to, are trying very hard to stop law enforcement from doing forensic genealogy like this on their sites, because they hate the press that freaks their customers out.

  20. Additional points of comparison can cut down the amount of time police investigators spend on the family tree part, but it's not guaranteed to do so. Sometimes it even confuses things further!

  21. These companies already have a genetic kinship matrix that's complete enough for most populations in the US that any person uploading their data will have at least one match already in the DTC service's database for forensic genealogy purposes; they don't need more.
