This is all just to say that the sooner we leave behind the fad mode (pick your own fad, my favorite is "managers don't matter anymore") and start looking at the role of managers (and CEOs) in the context of good theory and good evidence, the better. 4/4

Second, if anything, my sense is that the importance of managers as coordinators (especially of social/softer aspects of the firm) is rising over time (check out research, I have a new project on CEOs and social skills too). 3/4

First, just as in the past, the role of CEOs is fundamentally coordinative, especially in large/complex orgs. This was clear to us when we looked at time diaries of CEOs across large samples. You can/should delegate some stuff, but not this. 2/4

I really, really like this article, thanks for sharing. Want to add some observations from ongoing work that relates directly to your points on the importance of managerial coordination. 1/4

There are no absolute best practices in org structure, take 10000001. The trade-offs presented by decentralized structures are well known, yet they are constantly forgotten in practice.

You can’t pick your doctor in the ER. But your doctor can pick you. Two implications: 1) A lot of "practice variation" may be *preference* variation 2) Don't assume "as-if-random assignment" to docs Thread on a new, short paper

Clay Christensen passed away today. I had a class with him as a PhD, where he was a terrific teacher, as a well as a kind man. In his memory, two of his papers: The first speaks to his thoughts about leaving a legacy & the personal impact of research 1/2

Best companies of the future are going to need to be much better at statistics. Or they will be lucky and have very forgiving business models.
