Oh funny story, that police chief wasn't fired, he was demoted, and he actually worked there until he retired.
How is that substantively better?
Due to the part about not being fired, and keeping his job. The guy lied about being under federal investigation for breaking the law, and the city was getting threats from the FBI because of it. Would your boss be ok with that?
he asked the chief to resign; the chief refused, and buttigieg demoted him (it's unclear if he could fire him without the common council). chief later sued for it, and the city paid him $50,000
the part about the FBI was actually Buttigieg claiming that he had to demote the chief to prevent U.S. Attorney's office from filing charges for the taping; later, Buttigieg said he didn't know who told him that, & no one can confirm it. The chief was never accused of that lie
essentially, Buttigieg demoted the chief; fired a city attorney for failing to prevent a different agency (not federal) from investigating the racism claims; apparently made up a story for why he demoted the chief; refused to release the tapes, despite council demanding them...
...and admits himself, while not acknowledging all his other shady weirdness on this, widely confirm by multiple sources, that firing the chief was a mistake. So: other than getting all of that wrong, you really nailed it
