To become a stronger writer you have to write more, yes. But you also have to READ more. Reading content from folks who do tech content really well, & analyzing how they do it, will give you tools you can apply to your own writing.

We do this all the time. “Oh, I really like the way Sasha opens up her email newsletters! I’m going to make my intro similar.” We see something we like, and we decide to use it. Take some time to ask “why” you like something before applying it.

We already identify examples of poorly executed tech content. GitHub’s 2017 open source survey showed 93% of devs said “incomplete or outdated technical documentation is the biggest problem in open source”. “Incomplete or outdated” is a specific way of describing the problem.

(We can be just as specific when it comes to identifying GOOD content. I share these tips in this blog post: https://www.stephaniemorillo.co/post/2019/02/17/7-common-content-marketing-mistakes-developers-make-and-how-to-avoid-them …) (En español: https://www.stephaniemorillo.co/post/los-7-errores-m%C3%A1s-comunes-creando-contenido-para-desarrolladores-y-como-evitarlos …)

Ask yourself the following questions: What does [company/developer] do REALLY well? Who is their intended audience? How would you describe their “voice”: are they friendly, professional, conversational, sarcastic, something else?

What does their content help ME do? What problems does it solve? What does it help me learn? Why do I like this newsletter/blog more than similar newsletters/blogs?

Once you answer those questions, ask yourself WHAT can they improve upon? Even your favorite blog can do one thing better. Look at it critically. Maybe they can make adjustments on their site to improve how you find new posts? Maybe something about their tutorials trips you up?

Reading more is not only a good way to learn more about a particular topic, but it’s a good way of gaining perspective. There is no one “right” way of creating effective content. Different things work for different people. Over time, you’ll develop your own style.

When I was learning to code,
@_StevenNunez told me he always read books or articles that covered topics he was always familiar with. Why? Because there is more than one way of explaining things, and sometimes a different explanation made things more clear for him.Prikaži ovu nit -
So read more technical content, and read often! On that note:
What are some tech blogs and newsletters you REALLY like, and why?
