Mostly, it's class politics. And identity politics are the politics of racial grievance. Democrats gave a master class - and Trump (or more accurately, Bannon) took good notes. Congrats!

Good point Tom. Very good point. If only the Democratic Party had maintained a real populism, they would not have left an opening for the BS false populism of Trump. He saw that opening.

It seems that "I want to work to help everyone" is taken as "if I think you aren't working for me, you are working against me". That goes to the mindset of rural/GOP whites that seem to think this is a zero-sum game
