Diverse casts are great! But it’s not enough if the narrative and motifs are still drawing on orientalist or terrorist stereotypes.

To its credit #RogueOne includes PoC in all factions. Still most leaders of the good rebels are white and ALL the extremist rebels are PoC.

Dear Hollywood: Please stop wardrobing your science fictional “extremists” in turbans. Thanks in advance.

Welp, Star Wars fans are already invading my mentions to yell at me for pointing out the obvious orientalist motifs on Jedha in #RogueOne.

Just to be clear #RogueOne’s narrative frames Saw Gerrera’s rebel faction as extremist terrorists. They are all dressed in turbans.

To be fair the final rebel offensive in #RogueOne includes many characters of color which is good. Doesn’t excuse the orientalism though.

For those not here to yell at me for criticizing Star Wars. I highly recommend Edward Said’s book Orientalism:https://www.amazon.com/Orientalism-Edward-W-Said/dp/039474067X …

#RogueOne has two rebel factions. The “good” rebel alliance we all know about and then Saw's “extremist” rebels who are all wearing turbans.

not to 100% disagree, but it IS pretty key to narrative that the "good" Rebellion is losing b/c they rejected the "extremists"

Seems to me they were pretty "extreme" too (ordering murders etc) but weren't framed as monsters for it like Saw's faction.

Interesting. R1 portrays a fractured Rebellion. Like conflating 'ordinary' Muslims with Jihadist extremists?
