I had a year of experience and someone (who guess what, worked for a bootcamp) told me I should probably attend a bootcamp and get better foundations. Which is ironic because my last job hired me because they saw I had such solid JS foundations for my level!

There is absolutely NOTHING a bootcamp gives you that you can't do on your own. Now, I said can't. You may not want to do it on your own. If you want someone to hold your hand, attend a bootcamp. But I can almost guarantee the career services at the end will be useless for you.

Talk to people who loved their bootcamp, talk to people who hated their bootcamp, talk to people who were self-taught (
), talk to people with CS degrees, talk to people with computer-related degrees that aren't in CS.
Talk to anyone who isn't trying to sell you something.Prikaži ovu nit

Some companies strongly prefer either a degree or bootcamp. Self-taught is harder to prove, especially at companies that get tons of candidates. Plus many people learn best in a cohort, and most jobs after the 1st come to you because of who you know.
-
a) This is basically only true at companies that have connections to specific companies. I don't know of any companies that are "all bootcamps are better than self-taught!" b) Learning best in a cohort is a choice, so folks are free to want to go to a bootcamp.

If you “may need” a college degree, you “may need” a bootcamp. If you can (I believe you can) learn everything online, you don’t need these.
-
No, you may need a college degree because gatekeeping exists. Folks from minoritized backgrounds may never get in no matter how hard they study. Most Bootcamps aren't accredited, they offer no benefit at the end.

As someone who is attending a bootcamp, this sort of thing kinda feels super devaluing to what I decided to do what my time and money. Sorry you feel that way about us bootcampers I guess?
-
I said you don't need to attend a bootcamp in order to make it. How is that devaluing to you?

The pace of your learning in a real on-sight bootcamp with instructors and other students will be light speed compared to self-learning online. But once you have gotten your base, and entered the industry, of course it always is helpful to continue learning with online materials.
-
This isn't necessarily true. It's a myth perpetuated by Bootcamps. Knowing a kitchen sink of skills doesn't mean bootcampers learned faster than self taught folks. Most bootcampers I know had to study on their own for another 6 months after their bootcamp.
