If you are on the academic market or planning for a future academic career, consider casting a wide net, & look at places that may not be your obvious “top N.” You may be pleasantly surprised. My thoughts on how rank doesn’t matter as much as people think.

Did you know that we can estimate the value of citations? Each citation is estimated at ... 🥁 🥁... $100,000! Interesting insight from ’s “The Formula: The Universal Laws of Success.” We researchers are for once millionaires and billionaires. 💰🙃

A refreshing antidote to the cliche `If our language is lost, we won’t know who we are, we will be nothing'. In fact, people are masters of their languages. They retain the agency to shape the meanings of words, even when they switch to another language.

Women scientists rock! Within the span of a week, two separate major announcements were made of very large ($6M-$12M) research projects led by women: Heng Ji to explore event models & Ellie Pavlick to study text retrieval. Way to go, Heng & Ellie!

I ask all students to call me by my first name. And I persuade them telling them that my hope is to one day become like Madonna or Cher, when I would be simply known as Rada. More seriously, my belief is that I can earn respect without being called Prof. or Dr.

The way we say “No” is more similar across languages than the way we say “Yes.” Which speaks to the importance of the word.

Most of the words we use today are either metaphors or have once been metaphors, as metaphor is the main mechanism through which we create abstractions. Very interesting upcoming shared task to gain more insights into metaphors by et al.

It’s been 6 months since I started a Computer Science class and no progress. I’m going to write some code myself tomorrow to see what’s really going on.

Wow — is over capacity! The first time when I am actually happy to see a “website not available” message. It means more people are reading, and that means the world is up for becoming a better place. Way to go Goodreads and all of you book lovers! 📚❤️📚

When taking this picture, positively commented on the number of women in our group. He said he hoped his daughters would be like us one day. I am honored to have received this award from a President who valued women and their achievements.

One of the highlights of my career. Ten years ago today, at the White House, in amazing company. I was nominated for the PECASE award by for my research on lexical semantics. It continues to be a core interest, and I believe I made some of my main contributions in this area.

In a world focused on speaking, we underestimate the value of listening. Careful listening: - gives you more information - leads to more interesting conversations - makes it more likely other people will listen to you

Inspired by ’s “Grit” we explored the relation between grit & language using comp.models. We found that we can identify grit using lang+user embeddings & gained new insights into grit. Work w/T.Maheshwari,A.Reganti, Paper&data:

There she is. The Rock — a gate between continents, fought over so many times, for hundreds of years. After having heard about Gibraltar over and over, during history and geography classes, and more, it feels quite something to actually _be_ on it. 🇬🇮
