: building the online platform to foster interdisplinary work & awareness- these intersections can fall under a lot of names, & can be relevant to some who hadn’t previously seen themselves in the space

: great action item - think about how you can integrate and create links among different content types, based on lifespan and formality (evergreen = constant/ maintained content like institutional webpages)

: don’t try to ‘go viral’; try to anticipate trends & add value to the conversation. Ex ‘microsingularity’, when the social media world briefly focuses on one issue -> be in the convo, provide a link to scientific info for curious audience members

: although social media can sometimes seem dark, today we are talking about how scientists and practitioners can bring some light, not let misinformation go unchallenged, and use social media tools to educate and inspire

measured plastics in the water by feeding animals -> found similar levels to other parts of the world, of many kinds, with seasonal variability (wet > dry)-> plastic IS on the menu for Indonesia’s whale sharks & manta rays, look @ rivers as source (mgmt)

: for filter feeders, overlap of critical feeding habitat with plastic pollution leads to high exposure scenarios. For megafauna (like whale sharks) which high energetic demands, they take in a lot of water to meet feeding needs -> more plastic intake

: recognizing this limitation, practise science as a ‘team sport’, try to confront issues from power relations among individuals and disciplines, stay transparent from inception onwards (put out biases for discussion), & harness disagreements as a source of info

: science can be perceived as the unbiased, objective measuring stick to mediate the , but alas, scientists are still human, a product of their scientific genealogy (‘scientific cultures’) which can affect perception of scientific problems/results

: ex Pacific Herring in Haida Gwaii - amt of fish caught by fishermen followed a different trend than ‘biomass’ mgmt metric, bc of spatial distribution (fish not near where fishers fish, but still in monitored area)- different perceptions of what = ‘sustainable’

: how does the Rashomon effect (the same event experienced by different people, each with different/opposing perceptions which are no less true than the other) contribute to conflicts in conservation (& conservation science)?

Judie Mann: when advocating for conservation measures, each stakeholder group see the issue from certain, sometimes opposing, perspectives. Often, we (scientists included) make emotionally or not strictly rationally guided decisions

: What solutions are advocated for depends in part on what public perceives the problem to be. How does this manifest in public support for shark mgmt policies (eg target or limit based, blanket bans or managed fisheries)?

: why use static approaches to managing oceans, when we know how dynamic oceans are? —> dynamic ocean management uses remote sensing, threats (like fishing), & animal spatial use (lvulnerable bycatch species) to generate predictions of overlap & hotspots of threat
