Great article. I get at some of these points when I teach by emphasizing the trade routes between classical Athens and Rome out into the wider world. I think focus on trade is a great way to highlight the interconnectedness of these cultures.

For me the teaching of classical Greece and Rome should be welded in the wider Med, and Eurasian history (Persia's many iterations). Much of this discourse is very American, and concerned with current US culture wars The centrality of the Med to classics seems to get forgotten.
