“The most common reason for their apprehension is fear” - This is *also* a factor in both the politics and white evangelical identity. Fear of minorities being fully integrated into society, fear of not being dominant over society and politics, fear of new knowledge from outside.

To push that even further, I think that because they are so inseparable, many (most?) don't even realize how much of their thinking is influenced by their politics & think they are making faith-based decisions.

Years ago, my evangelical father told me proudly that he “votes his values.” Apparently the Republican Party has the same values. Perfect fit, as they both “value” unscientific theories, white supremacy, sexism, and authoritarianism.

I think the reason so many evangelicals are anti science is because science, many times contradict their belief that the bible is literal. The origin story is an example of biblical belief disproves by science. So it would be so much easier to have all science be questionable.
