    What is the virus equivalent of sandbags on the riverbank? Whatever it is, I hope in a virus-free future, North Dakotans might one day proudly describe it to a well-meaning, if somewhat clueless, young journalist in their midst.

    Rereading writing from a decade ago is cringey, but I loved that trip and have been thinking about Fargo as N.D. virus rates surge. Specifically, I remember hearing about the Red River floods, how proud people were of the community uniting in crisis.

    Steinbeck went to Fargo because he was “curious how a place unvisited can take such hold on the mind so that the very name sets up a ringing.” (That was my reason too, plus it was as far as I could get with vacation time.)

    I have been thinking about “Charley” this fall, because 10 years ago, still in the grips of anniversary-fever, and in the grips of a deep commitment to the continuing resonance of Steinbeck, I drove from the east coast to Fargo, North Dakota, following Steinbeck’s route.

    60 years since Ruby Bridges’s first day of school means that it’s been 60 years since John Steinbeck made the trip that became “Travels With Charley.” His route took him through New Orleans in the fall of 1960, where he saw young Ruby walking into school past hate-spewing adults.

    I am late to the actual anniversary -- I have become slightly less committed to anniversary journalism in the past decade -- but it’s amazing to realize that it’s been 10 years since I got to speak to and work with the remarkable Ruby Bridges.
