@AsteadWesley, accept compliments on his behalf whenever my mother sees him on TV -- and to think with him about the history being made in this moment.https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/05/us/politics/raphael-warnock-georgia-senate.html …Show this threadThanks. And from covering events like “Trumpstock” where people spouting racist rhetoric told him they weren’t white supremacists -- they were patriots. And the seeds of the grievance on display Wednesday were clear:https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/28/us/politics/trump-2020-trumpstock.html …

What to make of the first Black senator from a now-blue Georgia, and a violent white mob in the Capitol?

May your holiday takeout be merry and bright. Here's hoping that next year we can gather in crowded restaurants to argue about who can be trusted to pick a movie -- a beloved American Christmas tradition

Forgot one, from October: Will every Chekhovian gun be fired? Seems like the answer is yes. (Also, first time gchatting about Chekhov at 2 a.m. For me anyway. Cannot speak for Matt.)https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/02/us/politics/trump-coronavirus-2020-campaign.html …

What is the virus equivalent of sandbags on the riverbank? Whatever it is, I hope in a virus-free future, North Dakotans might one day proudly describe it to a well-meaning, if somewhat clueless, young journalist in their midst. https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/12/AR2010111204906.html …pic.twitter.com/WzBIqmkMlZ

Rereading writing from a decade ago is cringey, but I loved that trip and have been thinking about Fargo as N.D. virus rates surge. Specifically, I remember hearing about the Red River floods, how proud people were of the community uniting in crisis.https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/12/AR2010111204906.html …

Steinbeck went to Fargo because he was “curious how a place unvisited can take such hold on the mind so that the very name sets up a ringing.” (That was my reason too, plus it was as far as I could get with vacation time.)

I have been thinking about “Charley” this fall, because 10 years ago, still in the grips of anniversary-fever, and in the grips of a deep commitment to the continuing resonance of Steinbeck, I drove from the east coast to Fargo, North Dakota, following Steinbeck’s route.

60 years since Ruby Bridges’s first day of school means that it’s been 60 years since John Steinbeck made the trip that became “Travels With Charley.” His route took him through New Orleans in the fall of 1960, where he saw young Ruby walking into school past hate-spewing adults.

I am late to the actual anniversary -- I have become slightly less committed to anniversary journalism in the past decade -- but it’s amazing to realize that it’s been 10 years since I got to speak to and work with the remarkable Ruby Bridges.https://twitter.com/CarlosLozadaWP/status/1327706119918264324 …

“There was at least one casualty of election night turning into election week: an enormous American flag that hung from two cranes.
