i am always reassured by the bad works of otherwise great artists (though you and i may disagree whether it applies to this picture - he also did some terrible pictures featuring cricket pads)

This is not a great painting but by no means his worst. He has done some horrid, horrid paintings. I too am reassured by that. If an artist paints only wonderful stuff, he's probably not taking enough risks.

oh, my consolation is more egotistical and grandiose. it reassures me that my own bad work is not necessarily a disqualifying impediment...
