Pillow Talk was on TV recently. Hudson's character's mate (Tony Randall) spreads a rumour that Hudson's character may be gay. It's not too subtle either; makes me wonder how much audiences knew at the time.

I'd guess audiences of 1959, unless they were gay themselves, didn't even question his heterosexuality. They accepted what they were told, and unless they had personal reasons to think about homosexuality, it would have barely been a blip on their consciousness.
