It does say something about this subject when we can only come up with a handful of examples. By now there should be more of both of these kinds of books. I wonder whether things are different ouside the U.S.

Exactly. There are a lot of books with writers from the dominant culture trying their hand at foreign novels, but most aren't very good. I can list a number of horror shows. I'm interested in the magic of when things work.

One new category of books to love: by writers in other countries who in some sense are foreigners there though they are not from elsewhere. "English, August." Class/ caste/ a "foreigner" in rural India from a big rich family in the city. Not a white and "other" binary.
