It does say something about this subject when we can only come up with a handful of examples. By now there should be more of both of these kinds of books. I wonder whether things are different ouside the U.S.

I will throw in a fascinating book from 1928 that was impressive in its intent but didn't really work. Du Bois's Dark Princess featured a romance between a Black American medical student and Princess Kautilya, daughter of the Maharajah of "Bwodpur".
