Teaching a course I'm calling "Around the world in 40 stories". I have most of the world covered, but I need more short stories from Asia (Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Afghan, etc.) I know a lot of novels from the area, but not enough short stories. Hit me with your favorites!

There's a good catalog by F. Sionil José. He's known, of course, for his novels about the Philippines but I found his short stories compelling.
But I cannot remember a single title just now. Remembering Cap is on, though.

I’m sure you already have thought of these, but just in case, any short story by R.K. Narayan. I like many, but to name one: An Astrologer’s Day.

+1, for any story by R K Narayan. Or "Who cares", by Santha Rama Rau.

You can’t go wrong with any of the fun stories from Nasr-ed-Din Khoja. I enjoy the collection in Tales of Nasreddin by Henry Barnham
I really don't know. I'm teaching it as an undergrad course at UVA.

Some suggestions of Authors, R. K. Narayan & Sudha Murty for short stories. Panchatantra for moral stories for kids.

Mo Yan writes very good stories, especially the longer ones. Seagull Books did one called Change that was very good. Also the stories of A Yi are brilliant I think - kind of noir like, he used to be a provincial police detective.

I've only read a couple of novels. A story of his would be good. Have you read a good Ma Jian story?
