The Mask of Sorrow is a monument located on a hill above Magadan, Russia, commemorating the many prisoners who suffered and died in the Gulag prison camps in the Kolyma region of the Soviet Union during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.

When Korolev was released from the gulags as they tried to setup their space program, he nearly died trying to get from the gulag to Star City. It took ages for him to make the trip. His teeth were falling out. (Source, great little book: Starman, by Piers Bizony & Jamie Doran)
