Someone has to explain to me how such a great, idiosyncratic painter as Burchfield remains such an unknown.

Thanks for the great thread. I love Burchfield, and you posted many I had not seen before. He wrote beautifully, too. And his wallpaper designs are just as unexpected and idiosyncratic.

He’s wonderful. I suspect it may have something to do with his mainly using watercolours and the art world’s outsized love of oil on canvas….but not sure.

He’s not unknown here in his home town of Buffalo where a very impressive public gallery has his name on it.

I would not describe Burchfield as an unknown, but as you say, he is a difficult painter to categorize. His primary work was in watercolor and gouache, so that could explain why he is not more famous. His mid-career work was quite realistic - friends with Ed Hopper.
