Not really. Many have posited different theories and it makes for an interesting google search, but it's all conjecture. I'm not sure anyone knowns
I guess it formally references the garment under his robe, and his hair and beard, etc., but my immediate thought was how it acts as a kind of memento mori... the ghostliness of a shroud...
