For the first time in my life (almost 62) I'm living in a place with a dishwasher. I live alone, so I must say I don't get it. By the time I rinse & scrub the dishes, I might as well just wash them. I understand it for big households, but so far I've only used it once this week

You're doing this wrong. With modern dishwashers you don't need to 'wash and scrub.' So long as the plate is clear of tangible debris, you chuck it in and turn it on.
