When I wrote Koolaids, I was so terrified of the possible backlash. I assumed I'd never be allowed to go back to Lebanon, that I would be shot, imprisoned, all those wonderful things. For my first draft, I tried different names I could hide behind (& weird titles). 1/4

Koolaids came out. It was banned in a couple of countries, but I wasn't. Many were horrified. Some friends and family members stopped talking to me, but I'm afraid I never missed them. My immediate family and those closest to me were extremely supportive as expected. 3/4

I bring this all up because I'm cleaning house--deep cleaning. I came across the front page of the first draft, with the silly title, and best thing ever, the name, the NAME. I could have been Nadine Mohammad! 4/4
