That's remarkable. I've never seen this, nor heard that Van Gogh ever sketched nudes. I've never seen a painted nude by him. So it must have stopped with "Let me sketch you. Just stand right there."

Well. I see he was into the Heroic disposition.
I wonder if the person in the background indicates a larger context of male nudity, like a public bath, or if he was doing a study for something never executed, rather than something to rattle off on a lazy Saturday morning.

I think, like every artist, he was teaching himself to draw. Both drawings are early.

It seems, like vaginas, engorged penises are almost entirely absent from classical antiquity's art (perhaps they were destroyed, too) - but did they make a modern appearance somewhere, like "The Origin of the World"? Who brought them out?
