I was taught from an early age that artist's choices all Mean Something™.
It's a hard mindset to break out of. Sometimes a 48-star flag is... just a 48-star flag.

By the way, whim for me doesn't mean that there isn't meaning in the choice. A lot of "whim" decisions are unconscious brilliant choices!
