OK. So this is Madonna and Child with Canon Joris van der Paele by Jan van Eyck, painted in 1436. A lovely painting but not one of my favorites, but then look, look closely, look . . .

During the renaissance and early modern period it was not uncommon for somebody to sit for only a day or so for a portrait, but they would leave their clothes and objects with the painter for months to get those just right. Their clothes signaled their status.

This is what I thought too!! On the right, probably either David or Samson with the lion. On the left…..ummmm……maybe David beheading Goliath? So disturbing.
