I've begun to wonder if this is a general fault with democracy as such. The present situation worldwide doesn't suggest the cult of ignorance is limited to any one country.

The 'fault' is the idea that democracy = right to vote. But voting is only useful with a public capable of critical thinking and which is well informed on issues, plus a reliable voting scheme (e.g. PR).
Without these, elections just amplify errors and nonsense.
