I saw a retrospective at the Tate. I can make you feel better by saying that when you have all his work together, I found that it loses power, particularly the abstract squeegee paintings. He's great but the retrospective did him no favors.

interesting! I often find retrospectives have a kind of multiplier effect + hadn't so much considered a dimming of the power of particular works. I wonder if the same is true of reading through an author/poet's complete works. Someone must have written well about this!!

I'm not sure. Surprisingly, I find the same effect when I read a lot of Alice Munro (I love her work). If I read one story, it's incredibly powerful, a collection, less so. I read a selected stories once and had to stop. I do know many people who disagree with me.
