Really? I always thought of him as a classic and he is in most bookstores I frequent. I guess people read him as much as they read other classics of the time, no?

The grumpiness of the narrator of Unnecessary Woman was a tribute to him. In a scene in Angel of History, the narrator has a Bernhardian jeremiad, yelling at two writers named Thomas and Bernhard. I love his misanthropy. It's so alive.
