Really? I always thought of him as a classic and he is in most bookstores I frequent. I guess people read him as much as they read other classics of the time, no?

You may be right. My observation is based solely on what I see. I do notice that very few writers talk about him. I know many writers who haven't read him. I can be wrong sometimes!

Hm. Most serious people I know have read at least one. For a while, there, he was sort of the Werner Herzog of Euro-lit, except not as cheerful and life-affirming.
