Who else besides Whitman placed reviews of their own books anonymously or pseudonymously? Fictional characters are fine.

Why don't we allow writers to review their own books? If the norm were established that only balanced/negative, well-reasoned, memorably written self-reviews would be published, I mean. Might be interesting.

The self-review wouldn't replace the usual kind, but supplement it. How odd that this genre, as one of the things which are in this world possible, seems simply not to exist--or to exist only in the shadows.

I wouldn’t want to eviscerate myself publicly. I already horrify myself privately, thank you very much.

I guess, too, it would end up just being a tactic to collect compliments. Like saying, "I look so fat."
