Sometimes I think about the farm my mom grew up on, in Mississippi. Her father was in charge of the fields and the kids had to work in them. Cotton, soybeans, and so on. Her mother ran the vegetable garden and cared for the chickens and other animals. He was "the farmer" but ...

... were it not for her, the family would literally have starved. She kept bees, too, and canned and preserved food so they could eat during the winter. No electricity and no running water. Eight kids.
